The Bighorn is a 5000km squared are of beautiful alpine, subalpine and montane wilderness in central Alberta. Side by side with Banff National Park, the Bighorn contains Alberta’s last intact forest, meaning it is relatively free from roads, pipelines, seismic lines, and other industrial activity. The Bighorn is home to iconic Canadian wildlife such as grizzly bears and mountain goats, and contains some of the best habitat for native Albertan fishes such as bull trout and endangered lake sturgeon. A beloved area for hiking, climbing, and camping, the Bighorn also contains the headwaters of the North Saskatchewan River watershed; 86% of the watershed’s water originates in the Bighorn, which provides over 1.5million Albertans with fresh water. It is currently threatened by the possibility of coal mining, forestry, and oil and gas activities.
