Canada’s prairies are one of the world’s most endangered ecosystems, facing more threat than the Amazon Rainforest. The Govenlock, Nashlyn and Battle Creek grasslands are primarily natural prairie and support more than 11 species at risk, including the Greater Sage Grouse. This biologically diverse area in southwest Saskatchewan is widely recognized nationally and internationally for its significant concentration of migratory birds and is considered an Important Bird Area (IBA). Grazing these lands with cattle not only provides a livelihood to many local ranchers but also mimics traditional disturbance by plains bison, which maintains the health and quality of these prairie grasslands.
