The land portion of the Manawagonish Island Important Bird Area is a protected Nature Preserve, protecting nesting Herring and Greater Black-backed Gulls, Double-crested Cormorants, Great Blue Herons and Common Eiders, whose presence has collectively contributed to the island’s diverse coastal lichen flora. Sitting just west of the mouth of the St. John River, the rich intertidal waters surrounding this Bay of Fundy island attract a variety of marine life, as well as globally significant numbers of migratory shorebirds – including endangered Piping Plovers – at the adjacent Saint’s Rest Marsh & Beach IBA.
